Prayer for the Third Sunday of Advent
O Come, God of our Joy-
In gratitude we remember that
you created the whole world,
yet still you hold each of us
in your gentle embrace.
Grant us the patience
to live in joyful hope,
to trust in your abiding presence.
Open our eyes to see your healing
at work in our lives
that we might touch the world
with tender, compassionate care.
Give us the wisdom, courage and strength
to bring the joy of your love
to transform the earth.

O Caring Creator, Come
Psalm 146:5-6 Happy is the one whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in God. . .
who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them…
O Caring Creator, Come~
You made the heavens and the earth,
all that is seen and unseen,
yet you are near to each one of us.
All creatures of this world depend on you
for their every breath,
yet you care enough
to know each of us intimately,
to call each one of us by name.
The tender care which you bestow on each of us
is almost too much for us to fathom.
May our hearts overflow
with gratitude and joy.

O Compassionate Healer, Come
Matthew 11:5 …those who are blind receive their sight and those who are lame walk; people with leprosy are cleansed and those who are deaf hear…
O Compassionate Healer, Come~
Heal our hurting world.
You came in the person of Jesus,
offering healing to hurting bodies and souls,
and you have called us to be
the Body of Christ in the world today.
May we offer sight to eyes
that do not see your presence,
words of hope to ears
that do not hear your loving call,
a path to the feet
that search for direction.
Make us your instruments of healing
for this world.

O Rewarder of Patience, Come
James 5:8 … so you also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.
O Rewarder of Patience, Come~
Teach us to live in patient hope.
Too often we seek the immediate answer,
the quick fix, the spontaneous response,
unwilling to wait for the wisdom that comes from the pause,
from the quiet.
Too often we want to give up hope
when the answers do not come swiftly,
when relationships are not mended instantly,
when we feel our plans moving backward,
Help us to take the long view, the eternal view,
and give us patience to wait
in joyful hope.

O Lifter of Burdens, Come
Psalm 146:8 God opens the eyes of those who are blind. God lifts up those who are bowed down; God loves the righteous.
O Lifter of Burdens, Come~
Help us to recognize what weighs us down,
and to give you the burdens we carry.
Lift up those bowed down, bent low,
those laden with sorrow, with fear,
with the weight of responsibility
Give us eyes to see where we
might lighten the burdens of others,
so that they may walk with spirits,
eyes and hearts up-lifted,
and know the presence of joy
in their lives.
Tuesday, December 10
O Reviver of Deserts, Come
Isaiah 35:1 The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and blossom; like the crocus, it shall blossom abundantly, …
O Reviver of Deserts, Come~
Revive our barren world
in all the places
where love seems absent,
where care is hidden.
Seep in with your transformative joy
and unconditional love.
Remind us of the power of
an encouraging word, a gentle touch,
a listening ear, a consoling gesture,
that we may offer your love to blossom
the barren places in our world.
Monday, December 9
O Allayer of Fears, Come
Isaiah 35:4 Say to those who are of a fearful heart, “Be strong, fear not! Behold, your God will come …”
O Allayer of Fears, Come~
Take away our fears of danger,
of loss, of emptiness,
and replace them with
your promise of comfort.
Take away our fears of rejection,
unworthiness and loneliness,
and replace them with
your unconditional love.
Remind us that you walk
each step of life’s journey with us,
that we are never without your abiding presence.
Grant us joy in that promise,
and calm our hearts,
that we may offer that peace to others.
Sunday, December 8
Prayer for the Second Sunday of Advent
O Come, God of Peace-
Open our hearts –
to receive the love you shower upon our thirsting world,
to hear and understand those different from us,
to long for the peace you envision for our war-torn world.
Give us the courage
to leave our comfort zones,
to spend time with you in the quiet,
so we may truly hear your call.
Grant us the wisdom, courage and strength to go
where you lead us.
Saturday, December 7
O Voice in the Wilderness, Come
Matthew 3:3 …the voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make the paths of the Lord straight.
O Voice in the Wilderness, Come~
Call us out of routinized lives,
out of our busy cities,
our bustling malls.
Call us to come into a place
void of distractions and noise,
to a barren place of peaceful solitude.
Give us the courage to walk the untrod paths,
to leave our comfort zones
and go to uncharted lands.
Fill us with the imagination
to dream a new world of peace and justice.
and dedicate our lives to that way.
Friday, December 6
O Welcoming Host, Come
Romans 15:7 Welcome one another, therefore, as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.
O Welcoming Host, Come~
Open the doors of our hearts
to receive the stranger-
the person, the idea, the belief
that brings us discomfort,
that jars us from our certitude.
Open our hearts and minds,
our churches and our neighborhoods
to see your presence,
which we all share,
and which is deeper than our differences.
Remind us that as we welcome others
we welcome Christ.
