Prayer for the First Sunday of Advent
O Come, God of our Hope~
We invite your word into our hearts.
May we be awake and alert
to your presence in our lives,
to your hope for our world.
Call us out of our apathy,
and our own selfish desires.
Help us to live as people who strive
to unite, rather than divide,
to build up, rather than destroy,
to spread light, rather than darkness.
Make your vision and hope
for this world
our own vision,
and grant us the wisdom, courage
to work toward it.

O Waker of the Sleeping, Come
Romans 13:11 Besides this you know what hour it is, how it is full time now for you to wake from sleep.
O Waker of the Sleeping, Come~
Wake our bodies
as well as our souls this day.
Keep us from sleep-walking through
our regimented schedules,
our routine actions,
our superficial thoughts.
Help us to delve deeper,
to know your presence in all things,
to see the blessings of this and every day,
to truly experience the life you have given us.
May we live in the present,
gratefully receiving the gift of each moment
which you so generously give.
Thursday, November 28
O Lord of Light, Come
Isaiah 2:5 O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of God.
O Lord of Light, Come~
As we journey further into the Advent season, the days become darker and darker.
Create a fire in our hearts
that we may be light to others,
to those who live in the darkness
of ignorance, of poverty,
of loneliness, of abuse,
of war, of illness.
Fill our hearts with the light of Christ,
whose light was not overcome by darkness,
that we may offer this light as hope
to the dark places in our world.
Wednesday, November 27
O Transformer of Weapons, Come
Isaiah 2:4b …they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.
O Transformer of Weapons, Come~
Help us to create a world in which
races relate to rather than
retaliate against each other,
religions respect rather than
denigrate each other,
nations feed rather than
fight each other.
May our resources be used to nourish and build
rather than to starve and break down.
Transform our suspicions and mistrust
into openness and understanding,
to create a world which no longer learns war.
Tuesday, November 26
O Just Judge, Come
Psalm 122:5 There thrones for judgment were set, the thrones of the house of David.
O Just Judge, Come~
Guide our hearts
as we judge people and situations.
Give us your loving heart
as we make decisions about others.
Remind us that we judge
based on only a small glimpse
of the total person.
Fill us with your spirit of reconciliation
as we seek to settle our differences
in non-violent ways.
Grant us the patience and wisdom to make sound judgments,
as we seek to fulfill the hope
of a peace-filled world.
Monday – November 25
O Holy Word, Come
Isaiah 2:3b For out of Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of God from Jerusalem.
O Holy Word, Come~
Come to us today as you came so long ago
and dwelt among us in the flesh,
in the person of Jesus.
You have gifted humankind with
the power of words~
which we can use to build up or break down,
to sow love or hatred,
healing or hurt.
May the spirit of Christ guide our words,
that they may be used to create
rather than destroy,
that they may be used to further the work
and the hope
of building your realm of peace and justice.
